A Historical Hike of Smugglers in the Archipelago

The village of Öja is shaped by land uplift, rich traditions, and a community spirit rooted in cooperation and development. The colorful history of the archipelago unfolds where you least expect it, and fascinating guided tours are arranged throughout the year.

Join us for an unforgettable journey into the past with our local guide.

We meet at the harbor in Bodö, Öja, where the salty sea air and stunning archipelago scenery welcome you. After a brief introduction, we embark on a hike in the footsteps of early 20th-century smugglers. Walking the same paths and discovering their hidden hideouts, we bring history to life.

This approximately 2-km hike takes about 2 hours, and good shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. Along the way, we’ll examine smuggled artifacts, learn their secrets, and even sample the kind of provisions smugglers carried in their backpacks.

Our adventure concludes at Café Bryggan’s boathouse, where we savor a traditional Finnish lunch featuring Öja’s famous fish soup, homemade bread, and a delicious dessert. Non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, or tea are included, all served buffet style with locally sourced ingredients. Over coffee, you’ll likely hear even more captivating tales of the smugglers who shaped this region.

Highlights of the tour:

– Café Bryggan: A cozy summer café by the sea with breathtaking views.
– Fisherman’s Museum: Step back in time among the charming grey cottages of the early 1900s.
– Djupviken: A hidden harbor once heavily used by smugglers, home to a miniature ship, Equity, and a memorial plaque honoring local smuggler and activist Igor Sandman.
