Umeå is young, creative, progressive and with 133,000 inhabitants, it is northern Sweden’s largest city. More than 37,000 students give the university city a youthful and international feel. Umeå’s cultural offerings cover e.g. sámi traditions, the world’s most northern opera house, a sculpture park with over 40 works of art, interesting museums and tasteful gastronomic surprises. The architecture in the city centre is characterized by a mixture of old and new woven together.
The majestic Umeälven river runs through the city, like a deep-blue, life-giving vein. The town is surrounded by unspoilt nature, dense forests, six rivers and the rolling sea. Umeå is also known as the City of Birches, because of the 3000 birch trees in the city centre.
