The Lighthouse Island of Tankar, Kokkola
The island of Tankar is situated in the outer archipelago in the south of the Bay of Bothnia, approximately 15 km north-west of Kokkola harbour. In the 13th century, the island raised out of the sea as a result of geological uplift.
Today Tankar is a versatile place to visit, offering the traveler unforgettable nature experiences and excerpts from old archipelago life. During the summer there is regular scheduled traffic to the island from Kokkola Meripuisto. The port is located 2.5 kilometres from the city centre (ad. Meritie 7), at the end of a beautiful walking route.
In summer, Café Tankar serves delicious salmon soup with Finnish archipelago bread and a dessert. In addition to the soup lunch, visitors can purchase other café products.
The route tickets for M/S Jenny always include a guided tour of the island. The tours are also available in English. Find out more about the little church and museum and have a nice walk on the island. The lighthouse is open to visitors on specific days.
And why not stay longer? You can explore the original and genuine archipelago lifestyle by spending the night on the island.
